High School Summer Camp 2018

You are here: Home / High School Summer Camp 2018

HCI Games Group Summer CampThis summer, the HCI Games Group is offering a free summer internship for high-school-age students (typically grades 8-10, called HCI Games Summer Camp 2018) at the Games Institute of the University of Waterloo. The program is offered for the first time this year and therefore free of charge (offered at no cost to the students).

Are you a high-school student with an interest in creating games?

Constructed around four two-week units, we are looking for students interested in creating games, 3D printing, maker culture, and building technology around games. Our program is designed to give students a taste of the university experience while learning about game design. Camp runs from 9 am- 3 pm Monday- Friday with late pickup options available (3-5pm). Students will receive a certificate for completing each unit. Topics that we are covering during the summer camp in four different units are:

  1. Game Design and Board Games (July 3-13, 2018)
  2. 3D Modelling and 3D Printing (July 16-27, 2018)
  3. Maker Skills and Arduino Game Console Building (July 30 – August 10, 2018)
  4. Interactive Technology Challenge/Escape Room Design (August 13-24, 2018)

This is a new program and only a few students will be selected on a first come, first serve basis. Applications are now closed, please email the director of the HCI Games Group, Dr. Lennart Nacke, directly for any questions.

Location

The summer camp will take place in the Games Institute (Building EC1, located at 175 Columbia Street West, Waterloo, Ontario) at the University of Waterloo campus. See the campus map.

Registration

You will receive confirmation via email if you have been selected for the program after registering and we will email you several forms that will need to be filled out. Please bring signed copies of these forms on the first day of camp. We ask for a full time commitment of the student registering for a unit. Thank you for taking interest in our Summer Camp Program. Registration is now closed and many interested students have been added to the waitlist already, email us for any questions and also if you have not received an email reply to your registration form submission.

Schedule

A detailed schedule will be published here soon. The first unit: Game Design and Board Games (July 3-13, 2018) will actually commence on a Tuesday (July 3), because of Canada Day.
