New Publication by Hilda Hadan: Gamification and Gaming in Cryptocurrency Education

We are pleased to announce the publication of a significant study by Dr. Hilda Hadan, Leah Zhang-Kennedy, Dr. Lennart Nacke, and Ville Mäkelä titled "Gamification and Gaming in Cryptocurrency Education: A Survey with Cryptocurrency Investors and Potential Investors." This article appears in the journal Simulation & Gaming, Volume 55, Issue 2, published on January 22, 2024.

Abstract:

As interest in cryptocurrency continues to rise, many individuals are venturing into this field without sufficient knowledge. Recognizing the effectiveness of game design elements in education, this research explores how gamified learning interventions could be utilized to educate novice investors in a risk-free manner. The study examines how market investors perceive these gamified and game-based learning methods for cryptocurrency education.

To investigate this, the researchers conducted an online survey with 413 participants, including both experienced market investors and those interested in cryptocurrency. The survey presented mock-ups of two learning interventions: a gamified cryptocurrency learning application and a cryptocurrency learning video game.

Key Findings:

The study identified both benefits and drawbacks of incorporating gamification and game design principles in cryptocurrency education. Key insights include:

  • A strong demand for dynamic, accessible, reliable, and community-building gamified and game-based learning interventions.
  • The need for tailored guidance on integrating gamification and games in cryptocurrency education to enhance the learning experience for investors.
